Water Delivery

Murray Irrigation provides a seven-day water delivery service to customers.

This means that customers can make starts, finishes, increases and reductions to water deliveries on all days including weekends and public holidays via the water ordering system.

Season Operating Plan

The Season Operating Plan, in conjunction with the Customer Service Charter, form Murray Irrigations’ commitment to its customers and describes our service levels. The Season Operating Plan is released on an annual basis in line with the Distribution Rules Policy and explains how water delivery operates.

Water Ordering and Delivery

Ordering water within our Customer Portal is an easy process.  Just log in to the Customer Portal via the button below and go to the water ordering page.

Orders will be delivered based on the Mode of Operation at the time of your order, as set out in the Season Operating Plan above.

Order starts, finishes and changes must be placed before 6:30am or 6:30pm.

Starts, finishes, and changes typically happen within 30 minutes of the standard operating time for your outlet/s.

The standard operating time is the start of the execution process for your outlet/s and it is listed on the My Outlets page of your Customer Portal along with the Operational Area your outlet/s are in.

If your outlet has not operated after 30 minutes – please contact us to let us know.

For step-by-step instructions, take a look at our Water Ordering Guide below, or pop in our office at Finley or Deniliquin, and our staff will be happy to walk you through it.

High Demand for Water Delivery

When customer demand exceeds the physical supply capacity on a channel system, all orders are restricted equally based on the number of active flow shares.

Read our Restrictions and Flow shares fact sheet (right) for more information, or contact us to arrange an on farm meeting.

We monitor future orders and use irrigation intention surveys to identify channels with high demand and potential restrictions, as explained below.

Irrigation Intentions

To help Murray Irrigation provide a high level of service to customers, we send out Irrigation Intention surveys several times throughout the year. These surveys are used to:

  • Plan our maintenance activities to avoid disruption to you, both in season and during winter works.
  • Work with customers to manage demand ahead of time and avoid limiting orders where possible.
  • Understand what outlets (and channels) will be used for delivery.
  • Enable channel sections with no orders or intentions to operate at reduced operating levels to save water.

Channel Control System

Our fit-for-purpose Control System is one of the largest in the southern hemisphere. The bespoke technology allows us to account for all water in the system, can be easily adjusted to meet seasonal cropping and livestock requirements, and allows for targeted, or whole of system improvements, without compromising its primary purpose - delivering water to customers.

The technology is scalable, with no limitation to the number of sites in the field, and has low licensing and maintenance costs.

Watch our Control System video to learn more about this bespoke technology.

Regulating Structures

We use a gravity-fed system, which flows water along the canals and channels under the influence of gravity, similar to the flow of water in a river.

Within any particular section of channel, the level of water is maintained at a target depth using gates called regulators. As well as controlling depth, these regulators are also used to control the amount of water flow along the channel.

Once the set depth of water in a channel is established, it can flow onto the customer’s property through outlets. Outlets are used to control the flow rate of the water that leaves the channel.

In modernising the system, the regulators and outlets now boast remote-control and automation, which provides far greater flexibility and efficiency for our customers. The majority of these outlets are Rubicon FlumeGates™ and SlipMeters™.

Automation

The company’s irrigation system was operated manually up until privatisation in 1995. From this point, Murray Irrigation Limited, a company formed by the NSW Government, commenced its journey towards automation.

We’ve since completed a $206 million modernisation project called the Private Irrigation Infrastructure Operators Program (PIIOP). Round 2 of the PIIOP project transformed what was predominately a manually-operated system into a state-of-the-art automated network. The Government-funded project has upgraded the way customers connect to our system and provides a more accurate and flexible water delivery service.

The PIIOP project was the biggest asset renewal project in our region in the past 50 years.
