Rice industry field day delivers an enriching experience for MIL staff

On Thursday 9 March, representatives from MIL’s Customer Engagement Team attended the RICEX Field Day Event at Coree.

It was an incredible opportunity for staff to participate in this annual rice industry gathering, which brings together industry experts, guest speakers, and enthusiasts to explore the latest innovations and advancements in rice cultivation.


Throughout the event, the team had the privilege of hearing from respected guest speakers who shared their expertise and insights. Some notable speakers included Laurie Arthur (SunRice Group Chair), Nick Pagett (AgriPark), John Harvey (AgriFutures Australia), Neil Bull (RGA), Professor John Hornbuckle (Deakin University), Dr Chris Proud (Rice Breeding Australia) and Dr Cassandre Schefe (AgriSci).


Their presentations provided valuable perspectives on various aspects of the rice industry.

 Field Sites:


The MIL representatives visited three fascinating field sites during the event, each site showcasing different areas of focus within rice cultivation:


1. Automated Irrigation Solutions and Nutrition Management:


This site explored the latest advancements in automated irrigation systems and innovative approaches to nutrition management. The team learned about cutting-edge technologies that optimise water usage and enhance crop nutrition.


2. Rice Breeding and Crop Management:


Visitors to this field site delved into the world of rice breeding and crop management. Experts shared their knowledge on breeding techniques, disease resistance, and sustainable farming practices to ensure high-quality rice production.


3. Greenhouse Gas and Sustainability Trials:


This site highlighted the importance of sustainability in rice cultivation. The MIL team learned about ongoing trials and research aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving water efficiency, and promoting environmentally friendly practices in the rice industry.


Celebrity Cooking Demonstration:

 

One of the highlights of the day was a celebrity cooking demonstration by Master Chef judge Poh Ling Yeow. The MIL group was starstruck as she showcased her version of fried rice, which looked absolutely amazing. It was a treat to witness her culinary expertise firsthand.

 

The RICEX Field Day Event was a memorable and enriching experience.


The MIL delegation gained valuable knowledge from the guest speakers, explored innovative field sites, and even had the opportunity to witness a celebrity cooking demonstration.


The event not only provided insights into the latest advancements in rice cultivation but also fostered new friendships within the industry. It was a truly great day filled with knowledge sharing, great food, and new friends.
