Community in Focus: Moulamein men’s night

4 February 2025

AFL stars, health info feature at Moulamein

An array of stallholders will provide important health information at a men’s health night being held in Moulamein next week.

The event will feature AFL legends Brian ‘BT’ Taylor and Mathew ‘Richo’ Richardson as guest speakers, and there will also be support and advice services aimed at improving health outcomes for men in the region.

The event is being organised by the Moulamein Bowling Club, and will be held at the club from 5.00pm on Saturday 15 February. It is part of the club’s efforts to support healthy, viable and vibrant communities through safety and wellbeing initiatives for club members and the broader community.

When guests arrive at the club they will be greeted by stallholders, all providing important tips on staying healthy. These stalls will be in operation from 5.00pm to 7.30pm.

Among them will be local yoga instructor Jo Hearn, who will be providing information on local health and wellbeing and the benefits of yoga.

Also attending will be Dr Zeest Naveed from the Swan Hill Medical Centre. Dr Zeest has a certificate in Skin Cancer Medicine and Surgery, and has completed Rural Focused Psychological Strategies and Skills training.

There will be information from the national charity, ‘Sober in the Country’, promoting its "say no to booze" message. This organisation is creating radical social change and saving the lives of rural and remote Australians affected by alcohol harm through its advocacy, straight talk, lived experience and partnerships with leading Alcohol and Drug (AOD) organisations.

Other stallholders will include Ambulance Victoria and the Royal Flying Doctor Service, who will be outlining their services and health messages.

The Moulamein Community Gym will be on hand to provide fitness advice, and there will also be an exercise physiologist from Swan Hill District Health.

Food and drinks will be available for purchase throughout the evening, with Brian Taylor to be Master of Ceremonies.

The speaker line up will include Murray Irrigation CEO Ron McCalman, Swan Hill Toyota Dealer Principal Sebastian Parseghian and Nathan Menser from Transgrid, each representing the event’s three major sponsors.

Well known local and Moulamein Bowling Club President, China Gibson, will talk about his prostate story and life as a farmer, and there will also be an address from men’s mental health speaker John Harper.

The focus of the night will then turn to the AFL legends, Brian Taylor and Matthew Richardson.

Brian ‘BT’ Taylor is a lead commentator on television for the Seven Network and on the radio for Triple M. He is described as “a humble, generous and engaging character who is heavily involved in community and charity work and giving back to the game at a grassroots level”.

Matthew ‘Richo’ Richardson is an AFL legend, respected analyst and a Richmond icon who is loved by football fans, and is also described as “one of the most humble members of the AFL community”.

Moulamein Bowling Club General Manager Courtney Atkins has thanked everyone involved in making the night happen and is encouraging men from throughout the region to “come along and have a great time”.

“It is such a privilege to have these AFL legends in Moulamein, supported by a broad range of health and wellbeing service providers," she said.

"We hope they attract a big crowd to enjoy their presentations and also take home important men’s health advice.”

Entry tickets are only $10, with all entry fees donated to the mental health charity, Movember. Tickets are available from the Moulamein Bowling Club or its website, www.moulameinbowlingclub.com.au
