The Barmah Choke is managed by the Murray Darling Basin Authority (MDBA).

On 16 May 2024 the MDBA announced that the opening trade balance on 1 July 2024 will be approximately 56 gigalitres (GL) downstream of the Barmah Choke.

Each state manages trade applications for the Barmah Choke originating from their jurisdiction and WaterNSW released a Trade Notification on the revised interstate process.

It noted that NSW and Victoria entered into the Barmah Choke Application Protocol to refine processes, improve clarity and consistency between the application arrangements in both states.

WaterNSW has also prepared a Barmah Choke Frequently Asked Questions for 1 July to assist applicants.
